Soak Society's Natalie Thorogood on the benefits of wellness soaks and how she takes time out...

What is Soak Society?

We make all natural wellness soaks and bath accessories for busy modern women who know that me-time is essential to their success. We aim to spread the me-time message with our tagline 'hustle-soak-repeat', and also encourage women to switch to all-natural and organic beauty products.

When was the moment that made you decide to start your business?

It was more like a culmination of moments. I have always been entrepreneurial, even as a kid. As a teenager I had my own fashion label and at uni I would always be scribbling down ideas for 'one day'. Then about three years ago I just realised that there was no time like the present, and even though I didn't have a business plan, I just launched Soak Society with the first product - the Originale wellness soak - and then launched our other soaks as the business grew!

Our clients are loving the Soak Society Foot Soak included in our Classic and Luxury Pedicures, what are the health and wellness benefits?

A foot soak is a great way to use our wellness soaks when you don't have a bathtub at home. And also the best addition to any pedicure! Not only will you soften the skin on your feet, you will absorb the magnesium from the epsom salts in our soaks. Most people are deficient in magnesium, so an extra boost is important for varying health functions, but personally I find that it helps me sleep better and having more magnesium in your body is a natural stress and anxiety tonic. The natural clays in our soaks help to draw out toxins from your body while also neutralising foot odours, and the essential oils we use for fragrance also have incredible health benefits. Rose otto oil for example, is a natural mood booster!

Your selection of soaks are divine, where do you get your inspiration from?

Thank you! All of our soaks are vegan and cruelty free accredited, so with the Sleep soak for example, I tried to create a vegan version of the traditional 'milk' bath using colloidal oatmeal and white clay, so that there was still that creamy effect. I think each of our soaks are so different, and therefore appeal to different people. I created them that way so that they weren't all too similar. There is rarely a person who loves each one equally. For example, I wanted something much more feminine to contrast against the unisex like Originale soak, so I created our Rose soak. I love texture as well, so having petals in our soaks is important. It makes a bath so much more luxurious!

With our lives being so busy, what are the top three things you do to take time out for self-care?

1) Mindfulness and vedic (transcendental) meditation. 2) Weekly soak session with a face masque, hair masque and podcasts! 3) Different exercise classes - I'm always trying something new. Most recently: Hip Hop, Reformer Pilates and Restorative Yoga.

Since it's the beginning of a new year, can you share some of your resolutions/goals for 2017 with us?

Sure! Personally, I am actively practising Spanish again. I lived in Mexico a few years ago and we are visiting again this year. I've joined a local conversation group! For Soak Society, we have an exciting new product in development. I can't share too much yet, but I will say that it is very different to our wellness soaks! We're also focusing on expansion in Asia - in resorts in particular. Our little team is growing, which is exciting, and creating a great team work environment is an important goal this year.
